I bought this unit and the optoma hd65, and I wound up keeping the optoma due to the better color reproduction that the unit produced. The Mitsu has wonderful sharpness and extreme brightness, but overall satisfaction, I went with the Optoma. I actually had a test room with both units running on different screens (side by side) and the optoma right out of the box had much better color. Especially the black detail. I was a little frustrated with the adjustment controls, it wasn't quite as vertically flexible as I would have liked.

I ended up returning the projector, because it didn't have the throw range I needed for my projector room. I needed something with a 20 ft throw range, and the Mitsubishi only had a 15 ft throw for the 100 inch screen I have (my fault I should have checked this ahead of time).

Unlike other people, I don't know about the performance of other projectors. I found this projector pretty good value for what I paid ($800) to see movies projected on my wall (which is off-white in color).

The 16:9 ratio gives a theatre like image and the remote works bouncing off the wall itself. Have not seen much difference between using a VGA cable and HDMI when watching DVDs. The only objectionable part would be the rainbow effect - you tend to catch the RGB separation if you blinked at the screen while moving your head and this can be somewhat irritating.

I had trouble trying to figure out what I wanted as a first projector. Well...I had to make up my mind sooner or later, and glad I got this one as my first. Entry level at its best I guess.

I did spend a few evenings researching the technologies and projectors with different price levels and was willing to spend much more than the price of this unit.

I have no idea what the "better" DLP projectors are all about, but when the ol' lady started watching the commercials...her tongue was hanging out and I could see "wow" from her lips.

I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who does not rip everything apart and is not critical about minor details. Great price and I know we will probably not upgrade for a LONG time as we are both happy with this unit.


We watch this unit regularly now for I guess about a month.

We ended up painting the wall over the fireplace, and framed it using the reflective paint available online line (somewhere), but it looks great even on the bare wall!!

If you can, try and get the lowdown in real life on these units though...and do a "little" research on the technologies. DLP vs LCD, etc...both have their "pros and cons", both are reasonably priced,

What sold me on DLP was that it won't "burnin" but we shut our "stuff" off anyway, so LCD would have made a good choice also. Just try and check them out in real life if possible.

Overall...I'll give this unit a "10" and for the price..."11", and just to let you know...I am a little anal on perfection.

Purchased this projector to be the focal point of my 13Ft x 20Ft "man-cave" in my basement-which has now turned into our favorite family room. Paid retail at a big box store to later have it price matched within 30 days for $760 to one of the Amazon sellers price that has a store in the area. With what i saved on the price match on the projector and an Onkyo HTS-5100B, i basically got a killer Bluray player for free. Its incredible what a serious beginner HD Home Theater/Projector rig you can put together under $1500 with products like the Mitsubishi HC1600 on the market.

It is projecting ~12ft onto a floor standing 80" 16:9 silver screen. System consists of an Xbox 360 w/ HD DVD player, a Panasonic DMP-BD55K Bluray player and HD Cable box(Optimum/Cablevision). The Xbox 360 and Bluray player both feed the picture via a 25Ft HDMI cable from an Onkyo HTR576 Receiver. Cable through Component.

Pros: The HC1600 delivered with its excellent brightness and superb image contrast. The picture is quite outstanding regardless of media, fast paced Xbox 360 games like Gears of War2 and NBA2k9 have great colors, sharp and solid contrast, and play without a hickup visually. No scaling lag notable, courtesy of DLP's superior response time. I am very happy with this projector's performance for gaming!

The same can be said of watching HD film Bluray or HD DVD's, the picture really pops for a 720p projector and i found the black levels to be surprisingly good(Go DarkChip2!). The picture puts up a fight against my Samsung 1080p 120hz 61" DLP. When the wife notices, it further cements ones judgement. When you take price/value into consideration, this Mitsubishi has made me a projector convert. Theres no better way to watch film on a large screen. HD Cable looks equally as vibrant via component, however cant say I've tested the VGA port as of yet.

HD cable sports look impressive, just like being at the game. This projector achieves a very bright picture in LOW LAMP mode, achieving a very close to Normal Lamp mode brightness by engaging the Sports Gamma Mode setting, of which sitting directly under the Projector the fan noise is super quiet. I cant say even in normal lamp mode the fan noise has become an issue either, never caught my attention and thats a good thing. I found color good out of the box, but it was not very far from the current sweet spot after a little tinkering with color and contrast settings. I found plenty of flexibility in framing the picture with its shutter functions,digital keystone, and vertical location options. It is currently custom shelf mounted. I have a dimmer switch and we can watch this thing with plenty of ambient light and be very satisfied with the picture. Remote is straight forward, nothing fancy but effective and is backlit.

Cons: If you are one who 'looks' for rainbows you may find'm on occasion.
For me its when I blink my eyes terribly fast or quickly pull your sight away from a moving image and back, its not some sort of 'ghost' that will haunt your viewing experience..lol. I dont suffer from eye fatigue/headaches watching this projector, nor have I had any of the dozen or so people that have auditioned or sat though a whole movie mention it or point it out. So i think the whole rainbows/DLP thing can be grossly taken out of context as most critical things one reads on the internet. I play lots of fast film content and video games through this thing and its not an issue for me.
My only other quirk is the lack of additional HDMI connections, but for a product in this price range I havent found another option that offers multiple HDMI.

Conclusion: I gave it 5 Stars because for the price it is not a pretender- it packs exceptional value and performance for an entry level rig, that is bright enough to use in non light controlled/ambient light filled environments and also serve well as a business projector. The color balance, solid contrast and brightness truly make the HC1600 a viable HDTV solution in the era of LCD and Plasma displays...only ala carte BIGGER picture!;-)

I just got my HC1600 projector, so I cant tell about it durability or something like that, but I can say about its image quality.
I was thinking between this Mitsubishi and the Epson Powerlite, also 720p, but $400 above.
So I decided for this one and used the 400 on the Onkyo S5100 Home Theater
I'm very very veeeery happy (one more very..) with my decision.
I'm preatty sure that Epson's Powerlite is a great projector, probably better than this one (it must have a why for the price), but obviously you will buy only one projector and put it on you room, you will not have the other one to compare, and if the one you bought is good enought you will not be sorry for buying that one.
That's what happended with me. I wanted a nice 720p projector and I got a nice 720p projector for a nice price.
I made a screen for it (that's right, a Do It Youself screen) and turned on "my new toy". I may say it is much better than I expected.
As for any projector it is desrible a dark room, so with the light off for me its same image you get with a TV, but with the huge diference that you get a huge screen.
My screen is 67' width, so it's bigger than most large TVs, but you can get a much larger screen if you have enought room.
The high definition image is great, and for me its esential for a projector.
Summarizing, I thing Mitsubishi HC1600 projector is the best choice for a 720p projector. There are other opptions where you gonna expend more money, but if you really have money go for a 1080p projector, that's worth. If you are a Cinema lover and have limited resources, I suggest this projector and if there is any money left use it on you home theater sound, like I did with Onkyo S5100 (which also deserve a big review).

I was looking for the best projector I could fined that would fit in my budget. I am over all very happy with my HC1600. The picture is really good, I do not see any RBE ( Rain Bow Effect ) although is does have screen door effect. But unless you are right up on it, you can t see it. My screen is 10 feet wide by 5.5 feet high and I view it from 15 to 18 feet away. From there, you can not see the screen door effect at all. It is very quiet, Blu-Ray looks fantastic, and playing Motor Storm from a cockpit view looks like you are really driving a car, and the zombies in Left 4 Dead are life size. Puts a hole new meaning to "Head Shot" if you are a gamer like me. For my hard earned dollars, this was the best choice for me. I give it 4 stars only because of the screen door effect. But again, for the money you save, you can't tell the difference between this one for under $1000 and the 1080p that start at $3k with out it being side by side. With its HDMI hook up, you get the best visual out put possible. I will keep this review short as I think the pervious reviews are all well presented. I replaced the InFocus 4805 with this one and the picture quality is great. Video is great too. I have been watching fast action movies driven by my media center PC pushing 720p with 60Hz, and I didn't see any rainbow effect. Nor did my wife. That was our only issue, and I think we are safe.

I wanted to bring this to others' notice that as such, the price is low. But Mitsubishi is giving $100 cashback AND a replacement lamp ($350ish) - what on earth of a deal this is - Fantastic. In reality, the lamps don't go their full life, in about 50% of their usage is all we get from a lamp (from my research and past experience). two lamps, and $670 will get you through at least 3years of good use. By then, the 1080p (or higher) projectors would be priced well, most all channels would be 1080p transmitted at source(only hoping), blue-ray would be dirt-cheap etc etc.

Go for it! If you see hte rainbow effect, and that is a very rare set of folks, then just return it. Only 2 more days left I think before Mitsubishi's rebate and free lamp offer ends.

Just to sum it up, I wanted to bring in couple of other items I noticed:
* The projected picture has about a 1-inch or so of light bleeding on all sides of the frame, this can be slightly distracting, but I got used to it.
* Fan is relatively quiet, quieter than the InFocus4805.
* Low lamp and all those settings still provide great brightness and contrast.

There are more, I will put them in later. In all, great projector.

I see today that this projector which I bought two weeks ago for $671 on Amazon is now $654. I had been considering the Panasonic AE-3000 which is the best selling 1080 projector. I happened to see the Mitsu and its low price and I bought it on a whim. I guess my whim threshold is around $675.

The Panasonic is not dropping in price. It has cost about $2,200 for the last half year.

So if the most popular 1080 Panasonic costs three times as the most popular 720 Misubishi, does that mean that the Mitsu is junk?

I don't think so.

When the 1080 projectors first were released a Dutch HT hobbyist group set up an experiment. They took a 1080 and a 720 model from a major manufacturer and showed them to their membership in a controlled setting. Most people thought they looked very much alike but a small majority favored the 720 version.

How could that be? Well 1080 LCD projector were generally less bright then. But the Dutchmen had tried to make the projected images equally bright. In the end they couldn't explain why the lower resolution projectors looked slightly better than the higher resolution machines.

Today 1080 machines are praised by all the reviewers as being sharper than 720 models. But remember these reviewers are all in the video equipment sales business in one way or another. You can't get demo models of new projectors unless you are seen as helpful by the manufacturers. If you imply that the latest technical advance in projectors is trivial you won't get invited to the preview demonstrations or get a test sample to review.

Video front projection equipment is almost never available in a standard store for critical review by the customer. Who has ever seen a 1080 machine side by side with a 720 machine? This makes the front projector customer uniquely vulnerable to a few "impartial" experts.

I'm not saying that there are no differences between a $2,500 or a $7,500 projector and a $650 Mitsu 1600. I'm just pointing out that few of us really are in a position to judge so we are forced to rely on the opinions of web journalists who have an economic stake in the question.

I suspect that under controlled conditions most people would ignore resolution differences between 1080 and 720 projectors. Brightness matters as does ANSI contrast - and the Mitsu 1600 has plenty of both. As a DLP machine it has no screen door. Screen door was a 480 problem for LCD projectors. IMHO color differences between projectors are also trivial. Most customers never adjust much of anything and of those that do probably as many misadjust as properly adjust. Some people prefer a rosy tinted picture just as some people liked HiFi speakers with a mid range bump.

I run my projector in a room with a ten foot wide window for which I have opaque drapes. However the Mitsu is so bright I can now watch TV in the daytime with the drapes drawn. Today is overcast and still winter, the screen is brighter than the view out the window. That probably won't be true in August. This projector is fantastic for the price. It was super easy to set up, too. I have it on my coffee table about ten feet from the wall, which is painted off white. The picture is about six feet diagonal and looks great unless there's direct sunlight coming in the windows. The default apartment blinds don't block out very much light.

Hooking up the Wii was no trouble. Hooking up the computers were a bit more complicated. I used VGA, and I couldn't get either my MacBook or my Dell Inspiron (Windows XP) to output 1280x720, the native resolution of 720p. To get the aspect ratio correct, I set the computers to 1280x1024, and the projector to auto dimensions, then I set the computer to 1280x800. The projector then displays the correct aspect ratio, and you have nearly unnoticeable black bars on the sides of the image (because 1280x800 is not as wide as 1280x720). PROS: Great picture quality. I am very impressed with how functional it is. I love how everything I have pluged in has been detected without any errors, My PC, PS3, TV, ect. I have tried out almost all the input ports and everything works great. Blueray looks awesome. No more need to go to the movie theater. At 60hz Avg, you get plently of FPS for all your favorite PS3 and PC games and it looks AWESOME

CONS: fan is not as quiet as it is described as. However, it is bearable, not terrible. As long as you have the audio on you wont even notice. Rainbow effect may annoy but it doesnt bother me. Its to be accepted for the price. But it really isnt that noticeable either.

RECOMMENDATION: I have been very pleased with my purchase. For anyone debating between a TV or a projector, PROJECTOR is the way to go. The size of display far surpases my 60" LCD. I use this projector as my living room TV. It provides 100+ inches of HD quality picture, and hooks up easily into a cable/satellite set top box. It has normal component inputs for HDMI and digital audio. The fan is noisy by default, but you can turn the bulbs to a lower setting and this slows down the fan and prolongs bulb life.

Keep in mind that you'll probably want some sort of a home theater receiver that can handle multuple video and sound inputs. The projector only has inputs for one video input (2 if you count the additional HDMI). You need some kind of external speakers. I had an older non-HD projector before this, and worked it to the bone... so when I switched to the HC1600, it was another world. It has to be the best bang-for-your-buck HD projector out there. It is very quiet, and the color is great, the 'low' lamp mode is slightly less bright, but will extend the life of your lamp by 50% or more; I use it in the 'low' mode. I have it connected to my computer and to my XBOX360 and it works beautifully.

I have never used a projector with higher specs, so I can't compare to anything 'better'. The keystone feature for both left-right and up-down movement is nice so that it does not have to be centered to the desired screen placement. Its bigger than an HDTV you would purchase for the same price, and easier to handle!! I really have no complaints with this projector. The picture is crystal clear with bright, rich colors, the fan is much quieter than my old Sharp projector, and the bulb is bright enough in "low" mode to even watch during the day in my living room. I have yet to need to turn the brightness up to "standard".

The rainbow effect is not nearly as bad as I was lead to expect from other reviews. I only really see it if I dart my eyes back and forth quickly, but during normal viewing I don't notice it at all.

I can't comment on bulb life as I've only put about 400 hours on mine, but so far so good.

I've owned this for a month now, and have used it for about 30 hours of video and computer browsing. I was concerned about the rainbow effects mentioned by other reviewers, but I haven't discerned any in my time with it.

Didn't think i'd use the remote, but is convenient to change the inputs, aspect ratios (16:9 to 4:3 etc.) and the brightness / contrast. The bulb meter is pretty convenient to track usage of the bulb.

After much research, for the money, features ect, this is the bomb. Unit is lite, easy to move and set up. Excellent video out put and very portable. This is used as my PC monitor, my screen size is approx. 8'x5' normally, but is crystal clear at approx 20'x 12'. Big on line gamer and this is great, very high detail, but you must must must have a high end PC to take advantage of the HD and HDMI features here. Only down side I foresee would be bulb replacement cost. Not cheap, but for 3k hours, its worth it. Note, make sure you have very clean non gloss walls, its that good. I only need to have a power source and one HDMI cord up to the projector. You should plan on getting a good receiver that will have plenty of inputs to enjoy your projector. The kids and I love playing split screen PS3 gaming in the home theatre room. With a PS3 you get 1080i and can watch Blue Ray discs that are very sharp. I bought this projector earlier this month and I must say I am very pleased with it. My only gripe would be the slightly noticeable spinning of the color wheel as others mentioned. However, I operate it on the low bubl setting and the picture looks great. My media room is 13 ft x 18 ft and I am using a 106" screen and this model fills it with ease. I use a ps3 for the blue ray and playing madden and what can I tell you but all my guests are impressed with how much I spent on it! I combined this with the ONKYO 7.1 THX certified sound system and everyone says that they would rather come to my house than go to the theaters! Don't spend $3k at Best Buy for 1080P projectors. This 720p is great for the money and produces a greate picture. I have a 10' by 5' screen. At about 14' away the screen is extremely bright. I saw no rainbows or hint of a rainbow. Images were very crisp with no tweaking necessary. I cannot imagine a brighter nor sharper screen for any amount of money. Perfect? No. There is definitely room for improvement in black level management. On dark scenes there is a loss (somewhat) of definition. The darker the scene the greater the loss. However, in practice, the vast majority of images do not consist of a lot of dark content.

As has been mentioned by others, the HC1600 shines on sports events, soap operas, news shows and game shows. So it comes down to movies, which is why I gave this product a 4 vs 5. I compared it to my Sony CRT projector which is no slouch but it cannot compare with the HC1600 brightness nor sharpness.

Bottom line...if you are looking for a projector that will not break your budget that can rival any other on nearly 100% of TV and 90% of movies, look no further. If you want the very best, be prepared to spend $1000 more. And even then, remember, the best is not necessarily perfect. Be prepared to live with the idiosyncrasies that come with "the best".
